Murraya koenigii, commonly known as curry leaf plant or curry tree, is a tropical to subtropical evergreen tree belonging to the Rutaceae family, native to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Renowned for its aromatic leaves that are an essential ingredient in South Asian cuisine, particularly Indian dishes, this plant grows up to 4 to 6 meters in height. The curry leaf plant features pinnate compound leaves with numerous small, glossy leaflets that release a distinct curry-like fragrance when crushed. In addition to its culinary uses, Murraya koenigii holds significance in traditional medicine, with various parts of the plant utilized for their purported medicinal properties, including aiding digestion and treating various ailments. It thrives in warm climates and well-drained soils, requiring regular watering and full to partial sunlight for optimal growth. Often cultivated both for its culinary and ornamental value, the curry leaf plant adds a delightful aroma and visual appeal to gardens, and its leaves are commonly harvested fresh or dried for culinary purposes. Plant Care
To germinate Murraya koenigii seeds, use fresh seeds for best results, as they lose viability quickly when dried. Begin by removing the fleshy pulp completely from ripe berries and rinsing the seeds clean; do not allow them to dry out. Sow the seeds immediately in a well-draining, lightly moist potting mix, planting them about ¼–½ inch (6–12 mm) deep. Place the container in a warm location with bright, indirect light and maintain temperatures between 75–90°F (24–32°C), as warmth is critical for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, since excess moisture can cause rot. High humidity can help, so loosely covering the pot with a clear dome or plastic wrap (with ventilation) is beneficial. Germination typically occurs within 2–6 weeks, though it can be irregular. Once seedlings emerge and develop several true leaves, gradually acclimate them to brighter light and transplant as needed, maintaining warmth and moderate moisture as the young plants establish.
