Hoya vangviengiensis – cool-growing collector’s gem with powerfully fragrant blooms

Among dedicated Hoya collectors, Hoya vangviengiensis is one of those plants that tests patience and rewards precision. It may spend years producing peduncles without flowering, but once it finally blooms, the payoff is spectacular – clusters of pale, powerfully scented flowers that last for more than a week and even produce droplets of nectar.

Native to limestone forests of northern Laos, Hoya vangviengiensis grows epiphytically on mossy branches in constant humidity and filtered light. Slow, rhythmic growth and tolerance for cool nights make this high-altitude species best suited to growers who enjoy a challenge and value the long game.

Key features of Hoya vangviengiensis

  • Growth form: Slender, vining habit with thin, smooth stems; leaves elliptic to oblong, 4–7 cm long, glossy and leathery.
  • Flowers: Umbels of 15–25 blooms, each about 1 cm wide, with a pale cream corolla and pink-tinted corona. Fragrance is strong, sweet and long-lasting.
  • Peduncles: Persistent and capable of reblooming many times – never remove them.
  • Sap: Clear latex, typical for this Hoya group.
  • Growth speed: Slow to moderate, often pausing during cooler or drier months.

Natural habitat and origin of Hoya vangviengiensis

Hoya vangviengiensis Rodda & Simonsson (2017) was first described from Vang Vieng, Laos, where plants inhabit shaded limestone forest at mid-elevation, clinging to moss-covered branches. Later records from Yunnan Province, China confirmed the same species.

In habitat, Hoya vangviengiensis experiences moderate temperatures (roughly 18–25 °C by day, 14–18 °C at night) and high humidity year-round, with light filtered through dense canopy foliage. These ecological clues explain why this species performs best in cool, humid and stable indoor environments that echo its forest origins.

Care guidelines for Hoya vangviengiensis

Light

Provide bright, indirect light or gentle filtered sun. Aim for roughly 8–12 mol DLI or about 200–400 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ PPFD. Too little light suppresses flowering completely.

Temperature

Target daytime temperatures of 18–22 °C and nighttime drops to 14–18 °C. Brief dips to around 13–14 °C are tolerated if air is dry and moving. Avoid prolonged heat above 28 °C.

Humidity

Keep relative humidity above 60 %, ideally around 70–85 % when encouraging buds. Stable humidity is critical for bud retention.

Substrate

Use an airy epiphytic mix such as 40 % fine bark, 25 % pumice or perlite, 20 % coco chips, 10 % charcoal and 5 % long-fibre sphagnum. Avoid overpotting; oversized containers quickly lead to root problems.

Watering

Allow the top 3–4 cm of substrate to dry between waterings. Hoya vangviengiensis prefers brief dryness over constant moisture. Water thoroughly and let excess drain away; reduce watering in cool, low-light periods.

Feeding

Apply a mild liquid fertiliser of around 50–75 ppm nitrogen with each watering during active growth. Flush the substrate once a month to prevent salt build-up.

Semi-hydro and mineral substrates

Hoya vangviengiensis can adapt to inert or semi-hydro substrates with stable moisture and low-EC feeding, but roots must remain well oxygenated. Keep reservoirs shallow and avoid stagnant water.

Common issues with Hoya vangviengiensis and practical fixes

  • No blooms despite peduncles: Most often caused by insufficient light or overwatering. Keep nights cool, humidity stable and avoid constantly wet substrate.
  • Bud drop (blast): Usually a reaction to sudden humidity loss or root stress – maintain ≥ 70 % RH and avoid drastic changes in watering.
  • Wrinkled leaves: Typically due to underwatering or very dry air – adjust watering rhythm and raise humidity.
  • Yellowing leaves: Linked to overwatering or poor drainage – check roots and improve aeration if necessary.
  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or thrips; treat promptly with mild soap solutions or biological controls and improve airflow.

Extra notes for Hoya vangviengiensis collectors

  • Keep each peduncle intact after bloom cycles – peduncles are persistent and can rebloom multiple times.
  • Hoya vangviengiensis grows best when slightly root-bound; repot only when roots clearly fill the container.
  • Produces clear latex and is generally regarded as low-toxicity, but sap may irritate sensitive skin – wash hands after pruning or propagating.

Etymology of Hoya vangviengiensis

Species name vangviengiensis refers to the type locality Vang Vieng in Laos, where original material was collected and described by Michele Rodda and Johan Simonsson in 2017.

LOVE this pillow!!!! I have 2!!!!
Size: Queen (Mid Loft), Number of Items: 1
Well…..I have a love affair with these latex pillows. I purchased 2 of them. I have been allergic to feathers since birth and could only use latex pillows growing up. But, they became very hard to find for many years. I tried all the other kinds of pillows on the market and hated them all!!! “Won’t go flat!”….. whatever! They would go flat almost immediately. Or “Good for side sleepers!”….. NOPE!! I had a stiff neck for a week!! DONE with all of them. So,I finally got on Amazon and found this pillow. Ahhhhhh!! Loved it. Slept like a log! All night! Didn’t go flat!! No stiff neck!!! A winner!!!! Frankly,I don’t care about the cost… yeah…I know….we call have to count our change……including me. I saved to buy this pillow…..both times. AND, I would do it AGAIN!!!! And…proud to do it! So, if you have had it with all of those new prefangled so-called pillows…try this one. I would only avoid it like the plague if you are allergic to latex. Otherwise,I would definitely recommend this pillow! Wherever I go….my pillow goes. Camping, on a trip, to visit relatives…..my pillow will travel!!!!

The Perfect Pillow
Size: Queen (Low Loft)
Finally found the right pillow for me. I have purchased quite a few latex pillows attempting to find the right one. I was apprehensive due to the support description being "extra soft". Yes, it's super soft when you pick it up and squeeze it, but it provides the perfect amount of support for side and back sleeping.
