Boldo is a tree that grows in the Andes mountains in South America. Boldo is a traditional remedy used by the Araucanian people in Chile as a tonic, and the berries are also eaten as a food. Interestingly, fossilized Boldo leaves, dating from over thirteen thousand years ago have been found in Chile. These fossils have imprints of human teeth, suggesting that Boldo has a long history of dietary or medicinal use. The name Peumus is derived from "peumo", a name that probably goes back to the Mapuche Indians of Chile. The species name boldus is in honour of the Spanish botanist, Boldo.
The monimiaceae family is an incredibly old plant family and the remaining stock has survived only in isolated areas with ideal growing conditions. They show a remarkable diversity in their formation. Boldo has been used in South America for a variety of digestive conditions, although this may have stemmed from its impact on intestinal infections or liver function.
Properties:
The flavour and smell of Boldo is woody, bitter, astringent with a camphor-like aroma and the energetics are cooling and drying. Boldo has an affinity towards the liver, gallbladder, intestine, digestive system, colon, kidneys, urinary system and nervous system. Combine Boldo with Barberry, Fringe Tree and Artichoke Leaf for liver and gallbladder support. For urinary system and kidneys mix Boldo with Calendula Flowers, Marshmallow Root and Dandelion Leaf. For the nervous system combine Boldo with Lemon Balm, Chamomile Flowers or Linden Leaf and Flowers.
How to use:
1 teaspoon of Boldo Leaf to one cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.
