Ideal Growing Conditions
Sun: Full Sun
Water: Allow the soil to dry out a little bit in-between watering
Fertilizer: Do not fertilize nitrogen affixers like bean crops. An initial application or amendment of an organic granular fertilizer, like Espoma Garden-Tone helps boost seedling growth, but then do not fertilize again.
When & How To Sow Seeds: Direct sowing is preferred after the last frost. In warmer climates can also direct sow at end of summer for a fall harvest. Use square foot gardening guidelines to direct sow 9 seeds per square foot. Or direct sow seeds in rows, spacing each seed about 3 inches from each other, in rows that are 12-18 inches apart. Keep the soil moist for better germination.
Germination: 3-10 days
Days To Maturity: 70-90 days after direct sowing the seed
How & When To Harvest: Harvest when the beans inside have swelled but before the pod starts to turn brown to consume as fresh edamame. Or let the pods and seeds dry out to harvest as dried soybeans.
Common Diseases: The most common disease is rust, which easily occurs in humid or damp conditions. Improve airflow by proper plant spacing. Spray with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to clean and disinfect.
Common Pests: Critters like rabbits love to munch on newly germinated seedlings, so protection from small animals might be required. I often find leaves with the edges cut and rolled in. This is damage from beanleaf roller larvae. It is usually not bad enough to where you need to treat for it and can just ignore.
